My Mother and Music

Me: So mom, what is your earliest memory of music.

Mom : well my memory of music goes back as long as I remember. With your grandfather always playing music when your aunt and I were kids. Music would always be sang and played during worship where we sang hymns and their various versions.

Me: that makes sense because that is kinda how my first memories are. Next question. What kind of music did you associate to your childhood? And how did that evolve throughout your life up until around college.

Mom: Well obviously were were strictly religious household so a lot of my music when i was young up until high school were mainly hymns and worship songs that we would hear at church or around worship. Also growing up in Jamaica we didnt have as much access to music in our house as you would think. I would also hear a lot of bob marley and a Group called “the Abysseisans” played on the radio at my aunties house. But once I moved to America, During high school i was able to be opened up to a lot more ranges of music such as hip hop and r&b. Personally I was still a big fan of reggae music but also did dabble in a little bit of R&B listening to artist like Bell Biv Davo and Boys II Men.

Me: Awesome, Do you have a favorite musical Artist now.

Mom: I wouldn’t say I have a favorite but i recently have started to listen to country music and your sister and I listen to a lot of Luke Bryan during car rides. Other than that i don’t listen to music much.

Me. Yes i have heard, but do you know why you you don’t listen to music as much now.

Mom: Well its just not something i choose to do unless I’m driving in a car or I maybe hear it when I’m watching tv or if I’m cleaning. I’m used to hearing music at parties and clubs when i was younger but now that i dont go to parties much other than holidays I don’t get a lot of time to just sit and listen to music.

Me: that does make sense especially if its not in your face all day. For my final question I’m going to ask What you current relationship to music is.

Mom” Well as I said before I do not have the closest relationship with music. But I do have a good relationship  with it obviously because  I do definitely  love to attend your concerts and listen to music in my small spare time. It all depends on the day for me.

  1. This was great, Jordan. It was cool hearing about how your mom wasn't introduced to a large variety of music until she moved to America. A lot of people grow up only knowing certain musical styles such as hymns and worship music like you said. I know a lot of people who weren't even allowed to listen to much music other than that when they were younger haha

  2. It's really nice that your mom has a good relationship with music, even if she doesn't listen to it that much. I think it's true for a lot of parents that most of their exposure to music comes during the busy-but-quiet moments, like driving around or doing housework. That's how it is for my mom most of the time too.

  3. I think the dynamic between your mother and music is very interesting! With her growing up in a strict household and listening to only worship music, I am curious to know if she ever had wished or tried to listen to other styles during those times. I like how when she got to America she did branch out into other genres.
